Reference Desk
As you enter the second floor from the elevators you will immediately see the Reference Desk.  Librarians or other library staff are available there at all times to help you with your research. The Reference area includes 80 PCs with Internet access, the library catalog and web databases, and other research tools.  Printing is free.  If you are not sure where to start, or need help using the catalog or a database, ask at the desk for assistance.

Print Indexes
Many indexes are still available in print format.  These are handy when there are problems with the Internet, and some web indexes are not available on the web at all.  Ask at the reference desk for assistance in locating or choosing an appropriate index.

CD-ROMs
Some indexes are available only in CD-ROM format, and a few others have CD-ROM backups, which are useful when the Internet doesn't work.

Government Documents
The UTPA Library is a partial depository for selected categories of U.S. and Texas government documents.  Government documents are included in the library catalog, and other web sites can be used to find government documents and information.  Most documents may be checked out for one week at the first floor Circulation Desk.

Reference Books
In the middle of the reference room, starting just behind the reference desk, are the reference books. Reference books are arranged by the Library of Congress Classification Schedule beginning alphabetically with A and continuing through Z in the back of the reference on the South Side. Reference books are for use only in the reference room and may not be checked out or removed from the second floor.

.R43 [author]
1994 [publication date]

Books on the second floor have call numbers A (general works) through L (education).  Books with call numbers L (education) through Z (library science) are on the third floor.
