GIS/Media Lab

The GIS/Media Lab has a wide variety of resources to help UTPA students with their multimedia production needs for class related projects and presentations.   Students can scan and edit pictures, slides, and negatives, capture and edit video, create multimedia enhanced PowerPoint presentations, and use available software to make artistic creations for class projects and presentations.  The GIS/Media Lab also has ArcView GIS software available and a large format plotter printer for printing final projects.

The GIS/Media Lab does not provide consumable supplies. Students, faculty, and staff must provide their own photo paper, as well as CDs (CD-R), DVDs (DVD+R), USB Drives, external hard drives, video cassettes, etc.

GIS/Media Lab staff provide limited assistance with hardware and software.  They do not create the projects and presentations themselves.


POLICIES

GENERAL STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The GIS/Media Lab is a fully equipped multimedia lab that provides access and support to University students, faculty, and staff for academic related projects.  Its main function is to assist with graphics, photo and video editing, and multimedia enhanced PowerPoint presentations.

EQUIPMENT USE

The GIS/Media Lab provides equipment such as VCRs, DVD players, etc. for check out for in lab use only. In order to check out equipment, patrons are required to leave their University ID.  Patrons must sign in to use workstations in the lab.  Each workstation has a two hour time limit when others are waiting.

SCANNER USE

The scanners in the GIS/Media lab are strictly for scanning images and graphics. Scanning other materials such as books, articles, documents, or any other form of text is prohibited.  It is patrons responsibility to observe copyright laws when scanning materials.

INK JET COLOR PRINTING

Patrons must provide their own photo quality type paper when using the GIS/Media Lab color inkjet photo printers.  Printing on copy paper or any type of paper other than photo quality paper is not allowed. These printers are intended for photo and graphics printing only.  Regular text printing is not allowed on these printers. Patrons are allowed to print one copy of their final projects.  Printing copies of pamphlets, invitations, flyers, etc. is not allowed.  Patrons will need to contact a print shop for this kind of printing.

COLOR LASERJET PRINTING

The GIS/Media Lab color LaserJet printer will only be utilized for the printing of  biology slides and special projects approved by the GIS/Media Lab Manager.  Students are allowed to print one color copy of title pages, charts, graphs, or images that are part of a research paper.

For student biology slide or any other school related slide printing, the slides must be in .jpeg, .tiff or .bmp format.  In order to have their slides printed, students are required to bring their slides already saved either on a CD, thumb drive, or memory stick. The slides will be printed with nine slides per 8x10 sheet of paper with one copy of each slide set per student. Students are not allowed to print multiple sets of slides for their classmates unless their classmates are present and have signed in at the GIS/Media Lab. If the slides are based in PowerPoint, six slides per 8x10 sheets will be printed.

PLOTTER PRINTING

GIS/Media Lab plotter printing is limited to enrolled students, faculty, and staff for school related projects.  Enrolled students, faculty, and staff are allowed 4 linear feet of plotter printing per semester at no charge. If additional printing is needed beyond the 4 linear feet per semester allowance, approval must be granted by the GIS/Media Lab supervisor during regular operating hours 8 am to 5 pm. Only one type of plotter paper will be made available. Plotter printing will be available from Monday thru Thursday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Faculty and staff need to present a valid UTPA ID.

Printing will be done on a first come first served basis as time permits. Plotter printing is a time consuming technical process and patrons are encouraged to submit their projects at least 24 hours before their deadline.  The GIS/Media Lab will not be responsible for missed project deadlines on the part of patrons. The GIS/Media Lab manager can consider other projects for plotter printing on a cost recovery basis of $5.00 per linear foot. Printing multiple copies will not be accepted.
