How to Begin a Research or Term Paper
The first step in beginning a project is to remember, DO NOT PANIC!!! Yes, papers can seem a bit daunting and overwhelming. If you use the assignment calculator, remember to divide your paper into small easy to do sections, and do not procrastinate. You will find that it is much easier than you first thought.
Now you are ready to start on your paper. The first action you need to take is to consider the topic for your project or paper.
- Find a topic in which you are interested. It is always better to research something you enjoy or know something about. If you have been assigned a topic by your instructor skip this step.
- Here are some useful resources for finding subjects or themes for projects or papers, if you are unsure of the topic for your research paper.
- UTPA Library Reference Collection - Located on the 2nd floor of the Library. This collection contains subject encyclopedias and other resources that can help you find a topic.
- UTPA Library Catalog - Simply enter a term (skateboarding, nanotechnology, cloning, abortion, etc...) into the keyword search and the tool will display materials available here at the UTPA Library. This resource is great for finding material on a subject of interest.
- Talk to a Librarian - UTPA Librarians will be happy to talk to you about your project or term paper. You can either go to the UTPA Library second floor reference area or use our Ask a Librarian service located on the Library's website.
- Pick up a local newspaper.
Once you have your topic you can begin to refine it.
